What fitness equipment to start with first and what to hold off on- the minimalist version.

Let's create the most effective at-home workout space using minimal equipment! Whether you have a whole room to dedicate to your workouts or you're working out in the living room, this is my tried and tested favorite fitness equipment for any space.

1. Dumbbells

Resistance training with dumbbells is the most versatile way to exercise. You can work in all planes and with a greater range of motion. Doesn't take up tons of space and gain a whole LOT of strength. With my personal workout plan, I use these dumbbells I purchased from Amazon. You can check those out here. Mine range from 5lb-25lbs. If you are needing to save on even more space, these are an excellent option that my husband loves.

Need a beginner set? This is a great set that includes 8lbs, 5lbs, and 3lbs. A great place to start!

2. Adjustable Bench

You can do so much with a bench. Step ups, dips, bent over rows, and chest presses. Using a bench will allow for a great range of motion. For example, doing chest press on the floor, your range of motion is stopped by the floor. Whereas performing a chest press on a bench, you don't have that limitation making this exercise a bit more challenging. You can also adjust the bench to incline and do incline chest presses. I love changing it up a bit! Definitely a top piece of equipment!

3. Loop Bands and Mega Bands

I love both sizes for different reasons. Small loop bands are great for leg workouts and the mega loop bands (the larger ones) are great for adding resistance to pull exercises and various push exercises. These little dudes are so easy to travel with and take up little to no space. Which reminds me, I need to record a workout using these bands. That will be coming soon!! Grab mine here on Amazon.

You're set with the basics and if you were to just stay with these 3 pieces you'd get stronger and stronger- guaranteed. Now, if finances and space allow here are my next 2 pieces I enjoy having around at home.

1. Cardio Machine

My favorite would be a treadmill. Now, the only treadmill I own is a walking pad that I placed at my desk. Totally wish I purchased this a long time ago. I do so much work at my desk and this has been a game changer to my step count and daily movement. Honestly, I just didn't have the space for a full treadmill so this was perfect option for me.

My second favorite piece of cardio would be a stationary bike. This is where the sweat starts to happen! If you don't have back issues (like serious back issues) then I would recommend a bike- super easy and you can just start peddling. I love the cycle workouts on the fitness app with Apple.

Treadmill (I would recommend but don't currently own)

Lifting heavy dumbbells can take a toll on your grip especially when you're lifting 25-30lb dumbbells. That's why I love the barbell version of the Hyperbell. All I have to do is attach my dumbbells and it even works with my adjustable dumbbell set. Now you can lift heavier and gain those strength gains. We know that the more muscle we build, the more calories we burn which in turn promotes that fat loss we're after!
